Okay, so Brown still faces a rough ride with the Lords, but political expediency and naked Machiavellian practices is the form of common order in the UK, so don’t hold your breath. Having a 42 day pre-detention (internment) charge won’t look that bad when, in a year or so, they start discussing 90 days. We might even start seeing ordinary rendition as opposed to the extraordinary form flying above our heads whilst we sleep.
It really is becoming easier and easier to fathom a dystopian future for Britain. It’s sad, but all evidence points to the slow but inexorable rise of a Police State. Or maybe just one for Muslims only. The US has also been quite strongly treading the same path since 9-11.
Here is my take on it:
Of all the liberal fantasies about what a beacon of civilisation the West is meant to represent, the true reflection of society is that it has fallen through an abyss where the chasms of jahilliyah continue to engulf it. Binding elements in society such as law and order, morals and the social unit, have been cracking for decades but now they are crumbling. Add to this a grinding economic recession, and painful inflation from the seriously rising cost of energy. People will start to panic, and I mean hardcore. It follows that a Police State will be the easiest recourse, since if you can’t expect people to act responsibly, only force will keep them in line.
Add to this the Muslim Ummah: The one true nation that enjoins the ma’roof and forbids the munkar, which coincidently possess the resources that are the lifeblood of modern industrial nations. If future wars are to be raised against this Ummah for the sake of usurping its resources, then countries in the West with significant Muslim populations will be duly worried. Either they will have to placate to concept of ‘Ummah’ intellectually, or they will just make the community cower into submission, both of which are happening today.
On a side note, while I was thinking about the terribly lame excuses that the government used to justify 42 days detention, I also thought about my own lame excuses that I make up to justify things.
Alhamdulillah, I’ve got by now for more than three years without a TV. I’ve been saved from ever wanting to know why Alan Sugar looks like he’s had a facelift. Nor do I get distracted by endlessly irritating football matches. If necessary I can use BBC iPlayer for Newsnight and Top Gear, whilst I also have a constant pile of books to keep me happy.
But I have one soft spot….for watching scary films. Not the trashy types or randomly excessive gore flicks (I don’t even like Romero), but decent ones like 28 Days Later, The Orphanage and Scooby Doo. How do I really justify the time well spent? 128 minutes of my life wasted, maybe? My terribly lame excuse is that they effectively remind me of Youm al-Qiyamah. Don’t get me wrong, it is far superior to read the Qur’an, check through Ihya, and listen to an Imam Awlaki talk on this subject. Once in a while though, I don’t mind having the opportunity to visualise fear and helplessness…
